Spanish Club

The Arenac Eastern Spanish Club is open to anyone who has taken one year of Spanish (or more).  It is primarily a social club which attempts to expose the students to various aspects of Spanish Culture.

Each year the club “adopts” a child in a Spanish Speaking Country through Childreach International (a nonprofit organization that combines sponsor dollars to help needy children and their families become independent, fully functioning members of their communities). Last year our student Nelson Aguilar from Nicaragua “graduated” the program when he turned 18, and we received a new child, Angel Melendez.  This 12  year old orphan boy lives in a government sponsored home for children in need.  He is in the third grade, and lists math as his favorite subject!  Advanced Spanish students have an opportunity to write to him, and we’ll be forwarding pictures of our school and some of the club members to him soon.  The cost to the club is approximately $288.00 for the year of sponsorship.  Students earn the money to support him by various fundraising activities.

Club members take various trips throughout the year, including (but not limited to) outings to restaurants featuring authentic Hispanic food, movies, plays performed by professional touring companies, foreign language days at Central Michigan University and Saginaw Valley State University, and Cultural Awareness Nights (last year’s was in Hale) in our area.

This year, four students will have the exciting opportunity to put their language skills to the test via an 8 day trip to Costa Rica with Tawas High School in conjunction with the National Educational Tour Company.  This trip is very costly for the students, and club members are working diligently to raise money to cover the cost of  this trip, which will provide invaluable experiences for the students.  Katie Reno, Jessica Freeman, Bridget Schaffer, and Darcie Gaines have all committed themselves to making this trip a reality for themselves this April.
