Mrs. Hollenbeck’s Second Grade News  by Martha Hollenbeck

All second graders have been learning about sound.  We made string telephones, played instruments and some students even made their own instruments at home.  We were treated to the musical talents of Mr. Aldrich, who played his trumpet, Mr. Rajewski, who played his guitar, and Jim Schwede, a 10th grade student, who played his electric guitar.  Thank you so much for sharing with us!

Mark Rajewski, Kindergarten Teacher, shares his musical talent with the students.

2007
Senior Graduation will be held
Sunday, June 3
at 2:00 p.m.

Hats off to the graduates!

Ballot Proposal At-A-Glance

For the Annual November 7, 2006 Election

 REASON FOR REQUEST

bulletTo maintain the funding that voters have already approved – THERE WILL BE NO COST INCREASE TO HOMEOWNERS
bulletTo get full per student operational dollars ($7,075) that the state authorizes under Proposal
bulletIf this election is not successful, the district could lose approximately $19,896 of funding for next school year due to a Headlee rollback.

 THE PROBLEM

bulletThe 18 mills approved by voters in 2004 for non-homestead property was reduced to 16.6728 mills this year because of a Headlee rollback.
bulletThe rollback occurred because of Proposal A’s impact on the Headlee law when properties are sold and the assessed value is increased.
bulletThis vote is requested to merely allow the district to continue to collect the full 18 mills which voters approved in 2004 on non-homestead property such as apartment buildings, rental homes, vacation properties, some vacant land, and commercial/industrial properties.

THE PROPOSAL

bulletAt the November 7 annual school election, school district voters will be asked to vote on an increase of 4 mills on non-homestead properties for 3 years – (although the ballot language uses the word INCREASE, it is actually RESTORING millage from a decreased millage rate).
bulletIf passed, the district will levy only that portion of the 1.3272 mill requested millage necessary to restore the total rate to 18 mills for non-homestead property – which is the maximum allowable by law.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

bulletA SUCCESSFUL VOTE WILL RESULT IN NO COST INCREASE TO HOMEOWNERS.
bulletThe first year impact on non-homestead property including apartment buildings, rental homes, vacation properties, some vacant land, and commercial/industrial property will be approximately 1.3272 of a mill, or 1.32 cents on every $1,000 of taxable value.

Art Students Can't Wait for Spring  by Marsha LaFond

Even though the Spring 2007 art shows are months away, advanced art students are gearing up for the chance to display their talents.  The students are sharpening their art skills and experiencing new art mediums. They have set a goal of doing as well as Arenac Eastern has done in past years at the two area student art shows this spring.

Those who participated in the art shows last spring are aiming to receive as many, if not more, ribbons in the 2007 shows.  Art 3 students Heather Bell, Doug Hillman, and IlaAnn Caughel, who received a total of eight ribbons combined, feel they are up to the challenge again this year.  Heather comments, “I really enjoyed entering and winning ribbons last spring.  I think I can do as well in the next show.”

Other high school art students will enter their work as well.  Some participated as junior high students, and some will be new to the experience.  Art 2 student, Laikin Berry, recalls her eighth grade art receiving a ribbon, “It was exciting and I couldn’t wait to enter again when I got in high school.”

The two shows Arenac Eastern are invited to participate in are at the Northeast Arts Council in Standish and the Tawas Bay Artists’ Student Show.  Last year, Arenac Eastern received the most ribbons at both shows, maintaining its top ribbon recipient status since first participating in 1998.  Other area schools participating include Pinconning, Standish-Sterling, Tawas, AuGres-Sims, Hale, and Whittemore-Prescott.

Who Left The Tray?

I remember my first day as an Assistant Principal. I wanted everything to go perfect and I was careful about every detail of my new job. I had lunchroom duty with the middle school students and at the end of lunch my principal came into the cafeteria to see how I was doing. The students had just exited and as I glanced over the tables I noticed someone had left a tray. I turned to Mr. Parrott and said disgustedly, “Look at that, someone left their tray on the table.” “Rocky” replied Mr. Parrott, “Do you not see the 354 trays that were not left?”

An invaluable lesson was taught to me at that moment. Look for the positive and not dwell on the negative.

I would like to remind all of us that numerous, exciting, positive things are being experienced every day at Arenac Eastern. There are successes in the classrooms and valuable moments with students that demand recognition and praise.

At times, it is frustrating to witness complaining, negative people who attempt to destroy what we are successfully building at AE. So ask yourself, do I see the one empty tray that was left on the table? Or am I looking for and recognize the efforts and the diligence that is going into the task of educating our young people and sharing those accomplishments with others?
